Black Girl Classic

Black Girl Classic is an idea that will feature classically trained black girls and women. This event will broaden the horizons of communities who did not know that a degree in music can be beneficial for someone like them. In addition to the showcase, Black Girl Classic will offer a scholarship for black girls and women who will study voice at an institution of higher learning.

About this idea

After graduating from Spelman College in 2018 with a degree in voice, I moved back home to Michigan and quickly realized there were not nearly as many opportunities for black people to perform classically, nor were there examples of black women who were classically trained. In 2021, 656 degrees were rewarded nationwide for voice and opera, 5.03% of those awards were rewarded to black people and 2.42% of those were awarded to black women. I believe that percentage would increase exponentially if black women knew this degree would be beneficial for them, and if they could receive funding for said degree.
